Breakfast, as most of us have been told, is the most important meal of the day. Personally, I am not a big fan of eating first thing in the morning, so I see breakfast food as a category rather than a strict meal time. When I do eat breakfast, I tend to gravitate towards a breakfast sandwich. They are quick, tasty, self contained, and can easily be eaten on the bus! This page will go over what sorts of ingredients make good breakfast sandwiches, and give a few sample recipes you can tinker with.
A fried egg, ham, and pepper jack cheese breakfast sandwich on an english muffin.
A simple question, with a lot of answers! A breakfast sandwich can be loosely defined as any sandwich one can eat for breakfast, so there is a lot of variety at play here. When it comes to the breakfast sandwich, I usually like to make the distinction between sweet and savory for my sandwich fillings. An egg and grape jelly sandwich just does not sound very yummy to me, y'know? With this in mind, here are 2 lists of possible ingredients, separated by sweet and savory.
*Note that you do not have to make the distinction between these two types of sandwiches if you do not want to. You can make a sausage and jam sandwich if you want, experimentation is part of the zest of cooking!
Sweet:
Any kind of jam, jelly, preserve, etc. Basically anything sweet, thick, and fruity.
Peanut butter
Fresh berries (you should slice these thin to keep sandwich from exploding into your lap)
Sweetened/flavored cream cheese
Apple butter!!!
Savory:
Ham
Mayonnaise
Any variety of cheese (I usually go for pepper jack)
Egg (either fried or cooked into an egg patty)
Sausage (best if in patty form)
Bacon
Fresh veggies, like tomato or lettuce
There are also a few ingredients that are good on either type of sandwich, like butter and salt. These enhance all the flavors present in any dish, are are welcome in most things that I cook.
There are many types of bread that work really well for a breakfast sandwich. Bagels are a classic, english muffins are a personal favorite of mine, but the best bread is the kind of bread that you like. If you ever see a type of bread you havent had before that is cheap or on sale, I reccomend using it in a breakfast sandwich, as it works as a great trial run. Regardless of the type of bread you use, you should always toast your bread. A sandwich with untoasted bread is just not as good as one that has a perfectly golden brown crust.
For those who are unaware, the McMuffin is a breakfast sandwich sold at McDonalds. It is a ham (or sausage), egg, and cheese sandwich on an English muffin. I have never liked McMuffins as they use cheap American cheese and soggy egg patties.
Skillet with lid
Toaster
1 egg
2 slices of sandwich ham (I usually use honey ham)
1 slice of pepper jack cheese (or whatever cheese you prefer)
1 English muffin
Mayonnaise
1 tbsp Butter
Salt
Pepper
Cut your English muffin in half horizontally and toast it. Once it is done toasting, spread mayonnaise on both halves of the muffin.
Put your skillet on the stove and set it to medium high heat and put half of your butter into the skillet and let it melt.
Once your skillet is hot, crack your egg into it and let it fry. While the egg is frying, sprinkle on salt and pepper. Once the first side is browned to your liking, flip the egg and fry the other side. Once it is done frying, place it on one half of your English muffin.
Put the other half tbsp of butter into the skillet. Fold each slice of ham like a brochure (so into thirds) and place into the skillet. Cook until golden brown, and then flip.
Make sure your two folded slices of ham are side by side, and place your slice of cheese on top of them. Cover and cook until the cheese has melted. Once the cheese has melted, take the ham slices out of the pan and place onto the egg on your English muffin.
Place the other half of the English muffin onto the ham and cheese, completing the sandwich.
Enjoy!
